Geological Underpinnings of the Modern Mississippi Delta

Abstract

Subsurface geological structure beneath the Mississippi Delta Plain has generally been considered to be the purview of the oil and gas industry, and scientific publications that examine the connections between the delta and geologic structure are few and far between.  An overview of the primary structural elements (faults and salt domes) beneath south Louisiana and their relationship to the major delta systems of the Cenozoic will provide a framework to examine relationships between the same structural elements and Holocene deltaic deposition.  Each of the major Holocene delta lobes appears to have a genetic relationship with a set of conjugate faults and associated domes.  A detailed examination of the structural elements beneath the modern Balize Delta lobe will suggest a strong relationship between subsurface structure, patterns of delta growth and subsequent wetlands loss due to subsidence.

                                                                                                                                           Biography     

Chris McLindon is Director of Energy Education and Outreach at the Louisiana State University Center for Energy Studies.  He oversees the development and implementation of educational programs.  He also engages with key stakeholders including policymakers, industry professionals and the general public to promote awareness and understanding of key energy issues.

Chris worked for four decades as a geologist in the upstream oil and gas industry, and more recently as a geologist in the carbon capture and storage industry.  Chris holds a B.S. in Geology from LSU.  He is a member and past president of the New Orleans Geological Society, and is a member of the Geological Society of America.  Chris received a 2026 Distinguished Service Award from the Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies for his work in collaborating with university researchers using oil and gas industry data to study geological faults in south Louisiana.
