A Discussion and Examples of Integrating Geophysics, Geology, & Geomechanics for Unconventionals

Abstract

Time has shown the importance of including geoscience in unconventional oil and gas exploration and production.

Mainly opportunities were lost and bankruptcies were high when drilling was at such a fast pace that little to no geoscience work was considered.

Applying geoscience in an efficient, integrated approach is critical to land a well in the best rock, to stay in the best rock and to optimize the completion strategy. This leads to more efficient and profitable operations. A few of the critical steps in this process will be presented here.

                                                                                                                                           Biography

Mark received a Bachelors of Science in Geophysics from Texas A&M and a Masters of Science from the University of Houston in Geophysics.

He has extensive geophysics experience in the areas of seismic interpretation, velocity model building and depth imaging for Western Geophysical, Paradigm, PEMEX , Shell and Lumina mainly in Mexico, Venezuela and the United States. He also has worked for 4 years doing applied geomechanics studies on pore pressure prediction and wellbore stability projects for designing well programs.

Currently Mark is with Lumina Geophysical as a Technical Sales Specialist.

Mark is also President of the Asociación Mexicana de Geofísicos de Exploración (AMGE) – Houston Delegation, an SEG associated organization for geoscientists/engineers interested in Mexico and in close contact with the members in Mexico.
