Scotlandville, Denham Springs, and Baton Rouge faults
Map of Fault location
Segments of the Baton Rouge fault system individually named the Scotlandville, Denham Springs, and Baton Rouge faults course through the greater Baton Rouge area. Until about two decades ago they were considered distinctive for seeming to be virtually the only faults in south Louisiana with surface expression, and because they are active. Since then numerous other surface faults, also apparently active, have been mapped in south Louisiana. It appears likely that these escaped notice until recently because they did not impact urban or urbanizing areas. Movement along the faults of the Baton Rouge system causes damage to structures and pavements in places in East Baton Rouge Parish, but the damage appears to be localized along particular subsegments at present. A summary treatment of these faults in the greater Baton Rouge area may be accessed at: http://www.lgs.lsu.edu/deploy/uploads/BRFaultsGuide.pdf
